Windows 7 is undoubtedly one of Microsoft’s best loved computer operating systems and is relied upon by millions across the globe.
As of September 2019 more than 30% of Windows users are still running Windows 7, however Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 7 in 2015 and from January 14th, 2020 they will also end their extended support. This means that the software will reach End of Life, making an upgrade an essential task for the safety of your business.
If you currently use Windows 7 and haven’t thought of doing so before, time is running out to upgrade your systems to Windows 10.
Why do I need to upgrade my computer system?
The main issue with End of Life is that Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7. If you continue to use Windows 7 after support has ended in January 2020, your computers will still work but they will become more vulnerable to security risks from hackers and viruses. Microsoft will no longer provide the following support for your business:
- No technical support
- No software updates
- No security updates
Additionally, if your company holds any personal data on prospects, customers, suppliers or staff you will also no longer comply with GDPR as any personal information you process will no longer be secure.
Windows 7 will continue to operate after the End of Life date just as it does now and so to begin with you won’t see any difference with your computers’ functionality. However to avoid becoming much more vulnerable to hackers and viruses and non GDPR compliance we recommend you upgrade your operating system to Windows 10 software.
How do I know if my computer is running Windows 7?
If you are unsure whether you are using Windows 7 software, it is easy to check by looking at the start button on your computer, which will look like the image below, or alternatively follow these simple instructions:
1. Click the Start button. Enter ‘Computer’ in the search box, right-click ‘Computer’,
and then click ‘Properties’.
2. Look under Windows edition for the version and edition of
Windows your PC is running.
What are the next steps?
Upgrading your business software before it reaches End of Life is a necessity if you want your business to stay productive and fully operational. As any upgrade takes time to plan and complete, if your business is still running Windows 7, now is the time to move to Windows 10.
