Multi-Factor Authentication - have your emails ever been compromised?

Have you heard about Multi-Factor Authentication?

It’s not techno talk but actually a very smart way to protect your business.

You see, hackers are desperate to get into your systems and particularly your email. Once they’re in, they can monitor what’s being said; set up forwarding filters so they can get a copy of your emails and look for an opportunity to steal from you.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security system that creates a layered defence making it more difficult for an unauthorised person to access a target, such as an email, computing device, network or database. It works by requiring more than one method of authentication to verify the user’s identity. If one factor is compromised or broken, the hacker still has at least one more barrier to breach before successfully breaking into the target. It can be used in any scenario where an additional layer of protection and security against compromised credentials is required.

Every business is vulnerable to cybercrime and the practice of attacking your emails is surprisingly common. Multi-Factor Authentication is one way to protect against it.

Good examples of Multi-Factor Authentication include:

  • Banking apps: when you log onto a banking app it sends a text message to your phone with a secret code.
  • Swiping a card and entering a pin number.
  • Logging into a website and being requested to enter an additional one-time password that the website’s authentication server sends to the requester’s phone or email address.

 

 

 

There are a number of different ways to employ MFA, depending on the balance of security and convenience you need for your business. The more extensive MFA products will incur up-front costs and ongoing charges, however you may be surprised to hear that some will cost you nothing more than a small initial set-up fee, especially if you are an Office 365 user.
